Foreigners visiting the northern Netherlands were astonished

time and again by the vast numbers of pictures to be found in

the homes of both well-to-do and less affluent citizens. Even

those with little to spend could generally afford to buy a print

for one or two stuivers; the welthier could literally fill their

house with printings; Pictures were even hung in the kitchen.
